Wiiに対するちょっと楽しいニュースとちょっとした注意事項。

Wiiは任天堂のゲーム機です。直感的に扱えるワイヤレスリモコンがウリです。物珍しくて私も買ってみました。早速、「Wii sports」をやってみたのですが、一人でやっていてとても虚しい気分になりました。窓に映る自分の姿を見て、我に返って、やめました。友人が来た時には盛り上がりますが、以来一人ではほとんど遊んでいません。

で、そのWiiに関する面白いニュースがありました。

米国でWiiのリハビリへの応用が広がる

米国ボストンの地元紙「BostonNow」によれば、米国各地でWiiをリハビリテーションに利用する病院が増えていて、ボストンのThe Spaulding Rehabilitation Centerでも使われているそうです。従来のリハビリ手法と比べて、敷居が格段に下がり、同時に楽しめるという事で子供達には特に人気だそうです。

「Wiiは他のリハビリツールと比べて格段に手ごろで素晴らしいツールと言えます。誰でもお店で買って、家でリハビリをすることができます。このようなツールは今までありませんでした」とスポルディング・リハビリテーション・センターやハーバード・メディカル・スクールに務めるRoss Zafonte氏は話しています。

ボストンのスポルディング・リハビリテーション・センターでは、外傷性の脳障害や怪我などの患者に対してWiiを使ったプログラムをスタートしたそうです。モーションセンサーを使ったコントローラーやゲームを用いることで従来のリハビリに近い効能を得られるということです。

「新しい治療の秘めたポテンシャルは非常に大きいものがあります。これは非常に低コストでマスに販売されている商品で、かつ非常に大きな効果があります」

単に効果が得られるだけでなく、楽しみながら行える、こうした新しい試みは歓迎したいですね。

Wiiには、バランスをとるゲームもありますし、最低限の動きでスポーツなどが楽しめるゲームもあります。リハビリには良いかも知れません。

しかし、Wiiには、「Wiiitis」と呼ばれる合併症が報告されています。利き手の肩を痛める事があるようです。最初の報告は、The New England Journal of Medicineからです。

To the Editor: A healthy 29-year-old medical resident awoke one Sunday morning with intense pain in the right shoulder. He did not recall any recent injuries or trauma and had not participated in any sports or physical exercise recently. He consulted a rheumatology colleague. 29歳のレジデントが、土曜日にWiiでテニスゲームをやって、日曜日の朝起きたら右肩を痛めていたという話です。

その後、同様の報告があったようで、もう一本論文が出ています。Mayo Clinicからの報告です。

We present the first reported case of acute “wiiitis”, documented clinically and by imaging, of the upper extremity, caused by prolonged participation in a physically interactive virtual video-game. Unenhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated marked T2-weighted signal abnormality within several muscles of the shoulder and upper arm, without evidence of macroscopic partial- or full-thickness tearing of the muscle or of intramuscular hematoma.

こちらは MRI画像が報告されています。T2WIで、肩や上腕のいくつかの筋肉内が高信号を示していました。筋の断裂や筋肉内血腫の所見はありませんでした。

また、Wiiitisとは題されていませんが、British Medical Journalにも、Wiiで肩を痛めるとの報告があります。こちらは「Wii shoulder」とタイトルを付けています。

In the first clinic after Christmas we encountered a child who was complaining of tiredness and a sore shoulder, having been inactive over the past three years through illness. He had been given a new generation computer game for Christmas, and having checked everything else, we diagnosed Wii shoulder.

Anyone who has played interactive games on Wii sport will relate to this shoulder pain in muscles that have not been used for a long time.1 Within a day the discomfort wears off, as with exercise after a period of inactivity.

何事も、ほどほどにということですね。私は、右手関節を痛めましたが、ゲームによっても痛める筋肉が違うのかもしれませんね。
